SUMMARY: Administers nursing program in hospital for Skilled Nursing, Acute and Emergency Room to maintain standards of patient care, and advises medical staff, department heads, and administrators in matters related to nursing service by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate supervisors.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: Other duties may be assigned. Is responsible for patient care throughout hospital. Is responsible for continuing education, utilization review, quality assurance and ombudsman program. Is responsible for hospital operation in absence of Hospital Administrator. Recommends establishment of revision of policies and develops organizational structure and standards of performance. Interprets policies and objectives of nursing service to staff and community groups. Promotes working relationships with community agencies and with other departments. Preparation of departmental budget. Performs personnel management functions such as establishing personnel qualification requirements, drafting procedure manuals, initiating in-service programs, and installing record and reporting systems. Initiates studies to evaluate effectiveness of nursing services in relation to their objectives and costs. Is responsible for knowledge of all equipment used by nursing service. Works with Medical Staff and attends their meetings. Is Able to work closely with all departments, be a problem solver. Attends Board of Directors meetings, participates appropriately. Instills confidence in nursing staff, medical staff and patients. Has ability to communicate well and appropriately. On-call for nursing/hospital problems. Capacity to lead. Diplomatic, unflappable, polite, confident, discreet, with sense of humor. Required to be on the following committees: Infection Control Pharmacy Emergency Quality Assurance Utilization Review Patient Care Committee HIPAA/Compliance Committee Medical Staff Is responsible to oversee the CAN program. Fill in/cover nursing shifts when short staffed. Be able to function in any area of nursing. Responsible for over-seeing pharmacy compliance, dating and issue.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of this unit. Also, directly supervises approximately 25 employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Current California Driver’s License. Current Registered Nurse License. Current CPR card. Current ACLS certificate. Current PALS certification.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Must be able to type and file. Ability to operate standard office equipment. Ability to operate IBM and Macintosh computer programs.
