Handles triage and other phone calls that require clinical decision making and completes documentation and reports for management, state or federal requirements. Also orders clinical supplies.
1. Supervises the Medical Assistants and assists in the following tasks as needed:
a. Supervises the MA’s on the floor, checks injections and or medications.
b. Brings patients from the waiting room to the exam room and prepares the patient for the appropriate examination or treatment.
c. Notes patient’s chief complaint in the chart.
d. Takes and records appropriate vital signs.
e. Assembles and arranges equipment, instruments, etc., which will be required in the care of each patient.
f. Assists the Physician, FNP and PA with the exam or procedure, ensuring patient comfort and privacy.
g. Administers injectable medications and vaccinations ordered by the supervising physician or by the practitioner with the knowledge and consent of the supervising physician.
h. Cleans and sterilizes instruments.
i. Performs minor laboratory procedures authorized by the Medical Director such as urinalysis, hemoglobin, urine pregnancy tests, rapid strep test, blood glucose, and blood lead tests.
j. Draws blood and collects other laboratory specimens, prepares and packages them for shipment to the lab.
k. Maintains an adequate inventory of supplies and equipment in the exam rooms/clinic. Checks supplies for outdates monthly.
l. Cleans room between patients and at the end of the day. Ensures that sharps containers and bio waste containers are emptied as needed.
m. Performs hearing and vision screenings.
n. Performs ear lavage.

2. Supervises non-clinical staff and assists as needed in the following tasks:
a. Makes patient referral appointments for all clinic providers.
b. Schedules medical appointments within the clinic.
3. Performs the following tasks
a. Assists the Physician, FNP, PA in patient contact re: lab results, instruction, education, and advice on routine and minor medical questions under guidance of physician parameters.
b. Provides patient education in the office and on the phone under the guidance of Physician, FNP, and PA.
c. Orders refills of prescriptions with the Physician’s permission and supervision.
d. Performs triage on patients as needed to ensure that emergencies receive priority evaluation.
e. Assists the Physician, FNP, and PA with paperwork related to diabetic supplies, disability, in home services, meals on wheels, etc.
f. Obtains prior authorization for medications as needed.
g. Starts IVs, administers IV medications, and cares for ports.
4. Maintains the drug room
a. Dispenses prepackaged medications ordered by the Physician according to the rules and regulations of the CA Pharmacy Board and the DEA.
b. Checks drug room monthly for outdates and removes them from stock.
c. Ensures that controlled drug inventory is kept locked in the drug cabinet with restricted access per CFPC drug dispensing protocols (MED – 045A) and does a physical count with another staff member every business day.
d. Maintains an adequate inventory of drugs, supplies and equipment.
e. Packages and ships expired medications for destruction.
f. Checks and records temperatures on vaccine and lab refrigerators/freezers twice daily.
5. Maintains the crash cart
a. Checks the defibrillator regularly to be sure it is in good working order.
b. Checks monthly for outdates of medications and supplies.
c. Maintains an adequate inventory of medications and supplies.
