The department currently has one (1) full time vacancy, as well as one (1) limited term vacancy. The limited term position is set to sunset on 6/30/21.
DESCRIPTION: Conducts inspections and investigations in the enforcement of laws pertaining to pest prevention, plant quarantine, pesticide use, apiary, vertebrate pest and weed control, nursery and seed, produce/egg quality, as well as those pertaining to agricultural weights and measures, petroleum products, compressed gases, weigh master, device repairman, and quality control.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Monitors and conducts inspections of produce, plant material, nurseries, apiaries, weighing and measuring standards, petroleum products, pesticide usage, disease detection, quality and/or quantity control; issues permits and certifications, as appropriate; enforces the Agricultural Code, Business and Professions Code, and California Code of Regulations. | Enforces federal, state and local quarantine laws and regulations for the prevention of the introduction and spread of noxious weeds, injurious insects and plant diseases. | Surveys crop and non-croplands, rights-of-way and other properties to determine location and extent of animal/insect/plant disease infestation; participates in their eradication or control. Investigates complaints of potential violations; issues violation notices, warnings, citations, and notices of abatements, or takes other corrective action as appropriate; assist with preparation of administrative civil penalties. | Coordinates inspection/enforcement activities with other agencies, as appropriate. | Assembles evidence and prepares cases against code violators; provides court testimony, as required. | Operates a variety of vehicles and special equipment, including personal protective equipment, power and hand tools, microscopes, test equipment, pesticide sprayers, test standards, etc. | Prepares and submits a variety of inspection, technical and other records and reports. | Receives and responds to inquiries, requests for assistance and complaints regarding departmental programs and code requirements. | Examines and identifies insects, plants, agricultural diseases, etc., for growers and homeowners. | Performs various office duties as necessary, including preparing reports and correspondence, copying and filing documents, ordering supplies, attending meetings and training sessions, etc. | May coordinate special department programs or activities, as assigned. | Responsible for assigned vehicle, reporting maintenance issues to appropriate agency staff.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & LICENSES:

LICENSE & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer; to inspect County sites, to operate a motor vehicle and to visit various County and meeting sites; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone. This is partially a sedentary office classification; the job also involves field inspection work requiring frequent walking at inspection site areas to monitor performance and to identify problems or hazards; standing in work areas and walking between work areas may be required. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard, typewriter keyboard, or calculator and to operate standard office equipment. Positions in this classification occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects, up to 100 pounds occasionally and up to 50 pounds frequently, necessary to perform job functions.
Employees partially work in an office environment with moderate noise levels and controlled temperature conditions, and partially in the field and may occasionally be exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical, and/or electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.
In addition to filling current vacancies, Tehama County is establishing an eligibility list to fill future vacancies for an Agricultural Biologist / Weights & Measures Specialist I, II or III, as well as subsequent vacancies which occur during the life of the eligibility list.
